How Ello Helps Community Partners With Every Purchase
By now, many of us know that we need to do our part during this public health crisis in at least two ways. We try to stay home as much as possible, and wear a mask and socially distance whenever we do go out. But what about those who cannot isolate themselves, such as the vulnerable in our communities or frontline workers?
That’s why Ello’s simple business model is making a big difference in the Los Angeles area right now. For every mask purchased, Ello proudly donates a mask to a vetted frontline community partner. Ello has already been able to give many masks to medical centers and organizations that help the vulnerable.
One partner in the donation program is PATH. They serve over 20 percent of the homeless population in California, including through daily outreach on the streets and homeless shelters. PATH can provide masks to people that would not otherwise be able to access them. Ello’s 1:1 donation program helps make it possible.
PATH’s work was deemed essential in California. Many people experiencing homelessness have underlying health conditions as well, making them more vulnerable. Since the onset of COVID, PATH has ramped up their efforts to provide even more safe spaces, meals and other services to unhoused neighbors.
Founded in 1983, PATH works with people in over 140 cities in California. They support individuals and families at every stage on the journey out of homelessness. The masks they receive by partnering with Ello are key to their work at this crucial time. In addition to PATH, Ello’s donation program partners include a handful of other organizations.
- Los Angeles-area medical organizations like the USC Keck College of Medicine, the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and College Medical Center received Ello masks.
- Michelson Found Animals Foundation is continuing its work in Los Angeles with homeless animals, pet owners and more.
- Homeboy Industries provides various transition services to formerly incarcerated or gang-involved individuals.
- Amanecer LA is still providing telehealth services and delivering food and hygiene items to underserved kids, adults and domestic abuse victims.
Each partner organization greatly appreciates Ello’s customers. The people who buy masks from Ello are making an important impact in their local community. Also, both Ello customers and donation partners are getting the same quality product. Ello masks are fashionable, comfortable, carefully crafted and meet Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.
The locally sourced premium cotton blend masks are double layer, universal fit designs and are of course washable. They have stretchable ear loops that are both secure and comfortable. Customers can choose from solid colors as well as collaborative designs with local creatives: muralist Mattie and For Those Who Sin. The CDC and World Health Organization (WHO) now recommend everyone wear cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus. Medical experts say that some people may carry COVID without symptoms. You may have heard the phrase, “My mask protects you. Your mask protects me.”
Ello is especially dedicated to providing cloth masks to local healthcare organizations as their many employees continue their essential work. These organizations can give them to patients at hospitals or drive-through testing facilities as well as employees not engaged in direct, high-risk patient care. Even for healthcare workers who would ideally have a surgical mask to do their job, a cloth mask provides some protection. Ello masks can also be worn in combination with N95 or surgical masks.
Major cities like New York and Los Angeles have legally required the use of face masks. Beginning April 10, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti ordered that anyone out shopping, providing or receiving services, must have a face covering. Mask requirements with penalties now exist in New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Hawaii and major cities and counties around the country. During this time, we are all trying to do our part to help. Many of us are socially distancing or helping the vulnerable in our communities. Ello has worked quickly to offer quality products and donations as the demand for cloth masks reaches unprecedented levels.
